Underscan.
The opposite of overscan. In underscan, a video or computer image is reduced so that all four edges are visible on-screen, leaving it surrounded by black borders. Underscan is used to show what is happening in the blanking period and at the beginning and end of scan lines and frames. Underscanning can uncover latent image problems for identification and correction.
UHF.
Ultra high frequency; TV channels 14-69
Ultrasonic.
Sound with a pitch so high, humans can't hear it. When used in autofocus cameras, ultrasonic waves bounce off the subject to sense the focusing distance.
Unbalanced line.
An audio cable with two wires, one of which is a shield surrounding the other.
Underscanned.
TV picture which is smaller than the screen, showing the black edges of the picture on the screen.
Underscanned monitor.
TV monitor which can shrink its picture to display the edges.
Uniplexer.
Device to couple a film projector to a TV camera, useful for making video copies of movies, etc.
Uplink.
Transmitter that sends signals to an orbiting satellite.
Upload.
Send data from a small or temporary machine (i.e., a personal computer) to the main machine (i.e., a mainframe computer digital camcorder, or digital VCR). Usable Sensitivity The minimum signal required to provide a quiet, undistorted audio signal from a FM radio tuner measured in microvolts (or alternately measured in femtowatts) with a lower number being better.
USB.
Universal Serial Bus. A plug and play interface on a PC allowing devices to be connected and used without any need for configuration by the user. USB supports up to 127 devices and speeds of 12Mbps and allows devices to be added or removed without switching off the PC first.
USSB (U.S. Satellite Broadcasting).
Direct broadcast satellite content provider offering primarily pay movie stations such as HBO, Showtime and The Movie Channel along with a small offering of traditional cable television stations such as MTV and Nickelodeon.
